Freedom of information and privacy
The Northern Territory Information Act (the Act) provides the community rights to access government information, including personal information, while the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) provides how identifiable natural persons (data subjects) in the UK can exercise their data subject rights. Both laws safeguard the privacy of personal information and personal data held by the relevant organisations and ensure that organisations collect and handle personal information and personal data responsibly.
You have the right to access and correct personal information and personal data held by Tourism NT. Before submitting an application, we encourage you to contact us first as we may be able to assist you without the need for an application.

Your personal information & personal data
In the Act, Personal Information is any information a public sector organisation holds from which a person’s identity is apparent or is reasonably able to be ascertained. In the GDPR, personal data is defined as any information related to an identified or identifiable person
Tourism NT takes all reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised access to, and modification or disclosure of, personal information and personal data.
Tourism NT takes reasonable steps to protect personal information and personal data from misuse and loss.
Personal data and information is kept only for as long as it is needed for the purpose it was originally collected for. When personal information and personal data is no longer needed for that purpose it will either be destroyed or all information capable of identifying an individual user will be permanently removed.
You can make a request to Tourism NT if you would like access to any personal information and personal data held by Tourism NT about you. Access will be provided in accordance with applicable data protection laws. Information will be provided to you electronically, in a commonly used, machine readable format. If you request photocopies of documents or copies of photographs or other images, charges may apply.
Protecting your privacy
The Act provides remedies for breaches of privacy of an individual’s personal information. The Act contains 10 Information Privacy Principles that provide for the collection, use and disclosure, management and openness of personal information that Tourism NT deals with. Privacy complaints
If you are concerned that your personal information and personal data has not been protected, or that Tourism NT has breached your privacy, you can make a complaint in writing, setting out your name and contact details, and the circumstances that lead you to believe that your privacy has been breached. Please provide as much detail as possible such as date, time, location of incidents, who did what, and the names and contact details of any witnesses.

Collection of information
Tourism NT generally collects, holds, uses and discloses the following personal information and personal data:
- on internet users based on their interaction with websites and social media accounts owned or operated by Tourism NT, the NT Government or our partners, including but not limited to tourismnt.com.au, ntbusinessevents.com.au, and northernterritory.com;
- on consumers provided to the organisation by the individual, a third party such as a travel agent, third party data providers, data from travel industry partnerships or from a marketing organisation;
- on travel partners. Tourism NT endeavours to seek the consent of the individual or their company to collect, hold, use and disclose this information. If the requisite specific consent is obtained, this information may also be disclosed to Tourism NT’s tourism partners and
- relating to the employment, development and management of departmental personnel and contractors.
When you interact with us, you may be asked to provide personal information. This may include:
Identity Data: Your name, username or similar identifier, date of birth and gender.
Contact Data: Your place of residence, email address and telephone numbers.
Transaction Data: Details about products and services you have purchased from Tourism NT or our travel industry partners such as airlines, online travel agents and booking sites, and may include date and time of purchase.
Technical Data: Internet protocol (IP) address, your login data, browser type and version, browser actions, time zone setting and location, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform and other technology on the devices you use to access this website.
Enquiry Data: Is data you provided us with when you contact us for customer service assistance (by any means of communication including written communications or via our website(s), support forums, telephone, email, SMS, or our social media channels) or when you visit us at a public event, such as a trade show or exhibition or participate in one of our surveys, competitions or prize draws, we may record all customer service communications and keep information about the particular communication, including your name, your business details, the reason why you contacted us, and the advice we gave you so we can track the resolution of any customer service issues and for customer service training purposes.
Profile Data: Username and password provided by you and information regarding interests and travel preferences. We may also collect additional personal information and data when you participate in activities such as online forums, web forms, quizzes, surveys and chat rooms; post information on bulletin boards or through social media; complete nomination and application forms; or request information via email.
Usage Data: Information about how you use our website, products and services, as well as the frequency and pattern of your service use.
Marketing and Communications Data: Preferences for receiving marketing from us and our third parties and your communication preferences.
Aggregated data
Aggregated data refers to numerical or non-numerical information collected from multiple sources, measurements, or individuals. It is compiled into summaries for various purposes like making comparisons, analysing trends, or generating statistics. For instance, we might aggregate your usage data to calculate the percentage of users who access a specific website feature.
We collect, use, and share anonymised aggregated data, such as statistical or demographic information. This data may be derived from your personal data, but providing it doesn’t directly or indirectly reveal your identity, it is not considered personal data under the law. However, if we combine or link anonymised aggregated data with your personal data in a way that makes it possible to identify you, the combined data will be treated as personal data and used in accordance with this Policy.

Tourism NT will use information on internet usage for the purpose of targeting specific content to users for the purpose of marketing the Northern Territory as a travel destination. Where appropriate, Tourism NT will prominently provide a notice in each direct communication specifying how an individual can request to discontinue future direct marketing or market research communications, where a user has not opted out.
Tourism NT uses personal information and personal data for statistical purposes. Where information is used for statistical purposes, all information capable of identifying an individual user will be removed. Statistics compiled from personal information and personal data may be made public, however no information enabling identification of any individual will be included in such statistical material.
Tourism NT uses personal information and personal data to learn more about people using its websites and social media. If at any point Tourism NT decides to use personally identifiable information or personal data in a manner different from that stated at the time it was collected, all affected users will be notified. Users will have a choice as to whether their information is used in this manner.

Storage of data & international transfer
Tourism NT stores personal data both within and outside the UK. For data stored outside the UK, we use Mailchimp, which guarantees compliance with the UK GDPR through the Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) incorporated into our agreement. UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
Under GDPR data protection laws, use of personal information and personal data must be based on one of a number of legal grounds and we are required to set out the grounds in respect of each use. Companies may process personal data only when the processing is permitted by the specific legal ground set out in the law.

Retention & deleting personal data
Our retention periods for personal data are based on business needs and legal requirements. We retain personal data for as long as is necessary for the processing purpose(s) for which the information was collected, and any other permissible, related purpose.
When personal data is no longer needed (in accordance with the table above), we either securely destroy it, or irreversibly anonymise the data (and we may further retain and use the anonymised information).

Data privacy notice
Advice to all users
Your personal data is processed by Tourism NT as the Data Controller in order to send you the communication you have requested. If you do not provide your email address, we will not be able to send you your requested communication.
